Amgen Scholars at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) in Munich will engage in 8 weeks of intensive laboratory research. Up to 25 undergraduates will be exposed to cutting edge science in laboratories at LMU's HighTechCampus offering a unique academic and scientific life science environment with numerous renowned life science research institutions and world leading scientists.

Amgen Scholars at LMU will conduct mentor-guided, hands-on research in the fields of biochemistry, structural, molecular, cell, and developmental biology, microbiology, neurobiology, computational neuroscience, genetics, cancer research and physiological sciences. Lectures and workshops offer insight into state-of-the art research topics, related issues such as bioethics, poster presentations, abstract writing and scientific career paths. The program begins with a four-day orientation retreat in the scenic Bavarian countryside, where Amgen Scholars are introduced to LMU site staff, affiliated faculty and relevant research topics.

LMU Munich is one of the foremost research universities in Europe, with over 500 years of history. Excellence in research at LMU is consistently recognized in national and international rankings. 13 Nobel Prize winners, including Conrad Röntgen, Werner Heisenberg, and most recently, Theodor Hänsch are among the numerous LMU researchers who have received prestigious awards for groundbreaking work. Boasting the largest number of international students in Germany, LMU actively promotes academic diversity and provides a rich environment for fostering international research partnerships and networks.

Munich was cited by the New York Times as the "World's Most Liveable City" and Newsweek rated it as one of the "Ten Most Dynamic Cities" in the world in 2006. The third largest city in Germany and located within an hour's travel of the Bavarian Alps, Munich offers an exciting blend of high-tech industry, cosmopolitan city life and recreation possibilities.
